Who turns up

A construction background, then a 100 megapixel camera pointed at your roof

Surveys are flown by Sam Hembury from Exeter. One person, so the person who looks at your roof is the person who writes the report and the person you ring afterwards.

Why this ended up being the job

The background is construction rather than photography, which turns out to matter more than it sounds. Knowing what a failed flaunching leads to, or why a valley silts up on that particular elevation and not the other one, is the difference between a folder of pretty aerial pictures and a report that tells you something.

Plenty of drone operators can fly. Fewer can look at a photograph of a ridge line and say which end of it is going to let water in first, and fewer still will tell you when the answer is that nothing much is wrong and you should keep your money.

The work grew out of Hembury Contracting, a Devon contracting business, where the recurring problem was the same every time: somebody needed to know the condition of a roof, and every way of finding out was slow, expensive or dangerous. An aircraft with a serious camera on it solved that, and it has been the job ever since.

Everything is flown from Exeter, which puts most of Devon inside an hour. The South West is the patch because it is home, and because roofs here take a specific kind of hammering that you only really learn by working on them.

Registrations, kit and cover

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency. Every flight is planned to the rules that apply to the site, and the paperwork is available before the visit if your agent or insurer wants it.

100 megapixel camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video. The resolution is what lets a survey stand off the building at a safe distance and still show a hairline crack in a single slate.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera. Used where a leak needs tracing rather than just photographing, because water shows as temperature long before it shows as a stain.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. Certificates go to managing agents, block committees and insurers as a matter of course, without anyone having to chase for them.

DJI Mavic 4 Pro

100 megapixel Hasselblad camera and 6K video. Enough resolution to read a hairline crack in a slate from a safe standoff distance, and to crop into a single mortar joint without the image falling apart.

DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced

640 by 512 radiometric thermal camera alongside the visual one. It shows where a roof is holding heat or holding water, which is how a leak gets traced back to its entry point rather than guessed at.

How we work

Three things this business will not do

Invent urgency

If a roof is in reasonable order the report says so. There is no repair work being sold on the back of the survey, so there is nothing to gain from making a sound roof sound frightening.

Claim to see through a roof

A flown survey shows the visible condition of the outside on the day it was flown. Rot in a rafter and a failed underlay are not visible from above, and the report says what could not be assessed rather than quietly leaving it out.

Fly a job that will not work

Wrong wind, wrong light, wrong airspace: the survey moves. A flight taken in poor conditions produces imagery that cannot carry a decision, and charging for that would be worse than rescheduling.
